Membership Criteria

(Last updated on 6/6/18)
A candidate must meet the primary criterion of a management leadership position: she is an active business leader, owner, senior executive and/or high-level decision maker who has demonstrated sustained and recognized leadership positions in a company, organization or institution.

If at least three current members of the BLC in good standing recommend a candidate, and submit a detailed nomination form that satisfies the Membership Committee’s requirements, no further evaluation is required.

Candidates who are nominated by members who may not know them well, or who apply for membership, will be evaluated based on their leadership in one or more of the following categories.

For-Profit Business
A senior leader in a company that holds a meaningful position within its industry or sector, market or geographic location. Candidates holding a position of significant responsibility, regardless of title, will be considered for membership depending upon the size and position of the company or division and the degree of influence the individual exercises over the company's financial responsibilities like profit, revenue and sales, or internal processes like operations, marketing, communications, legal, people, client and external relations.

Corporate Board Director
A leader whose primary activity is serving on public or private boards of for-profit businesses and who serves on the board of a Fortune 1000 company or equivalent, or on the boards of several companies with total revenues of $250 million. Consideration will be given to corporate directors whose board role involves more active management of a company.

Professional Service Firms
Professionals with leadership responsibilities who lead revenue generation and relationships with their firm’s clients and/or are part of their firm’s management.

Not-for Profit Organizations or Institutions
Paid decision-makers with leadership responsibilities in organizations or institutions with significant assets or operating budgets including, but not limited to: grant-making foundations, with assets of $50 million or more; educational institutions with operating budgets of $50 million or more; and cultural institutions with operating budgets of $20 million or more.

Entrepreneurs A founder, owner or CEO of her own business preferably with 3+ years previous senior leadership experience in an industry or service business. It is strongly preferred that the enterprise has achieved one of the following criteria:

  • $5M+ annual revenue
