History of BLC

Founded in 1989 with advent of the first cohort of women to reach the C-suite, by a group of senior Wellesley alumnae. The Business Leadership Council was established in recognition of Wellesley’s pivotal role in shaping its members’ leadership journeys. From its earliest days, the BLC committed to giving back—to the College, its students, and the broader community—by leveraging the collective talents of accomplished women in business and nonprofit sectors.

From 50 members participating in 1990, BLC membership now exceeds 250 alumnae around the world, dedicated to the mission and vision of the organization – supporting each other, the College, and our students.

In September 1989, Wellesley President Nannerl Keohane sent letters to alumnae with “notable achievements in business,” inviting them to the launch of the Business Leadership Council on campus on November 3-4, 1989.

The first “planning conference” for BLC was held on November 3-4, 1989 at Wellesley College, beginning with a dinner at President Keohane’s house.  A business meeting was held on November 4, 1989 at Clapp Library.
